How can I find out if email correspondance is honest or legal?

I have been contacted about an inheritance I have been given by someone I do not recall. Nothing has been ask of me except my name, address and a fax of my drivers license, to a banking institution. My license does not have my social security number. Should I contact a lawyer to investigate or where can I find someone to help me determine whether or not this is true? Please help. Thanks

How can I find out if email correspondance is honest or legal?
No need to contact anyone; it's a scam. I suspect it's some form of identity theft, from what you describe. Another variation involves the author trying to get money from you for legal and official fees to release money held in a bank or some other institution.

The best advice I can give you is treat any E-mail that requests any of your personal or financial information as a scam, even if it appears to come from an official or trustworthy source, such as your bank.
Reply:Just leave it be, I get these every few months too... As for some of my other family, these people send them out in bulk, the reason they want a copy of things is so they have your info.. You are not getting any money be careful with these things, if it was real someone would call you and you would speak with a lawyer..
Reply:Pat,

It's a scam. Everyone gets those emails.

If it were an inheritance, you would have been contacted by an attorney via certified mail.

Eventually, they will ask you to send them a fee and the check you get in return will be a fake one.
Reply:The best way to handle this is by hitting the spam button. Once they have your license number they get get almost any info they need on you. Don't be a fool it's a SCAM!
